Business brokers are an essential and important segment of the SME Community. The business broking industry is only about 60 years old. In Australia, it is even younger. The industry really didn’t start until the 1990s. All of the practical knowledge and skills have been passed from the older generation to the present. It is only now that it is beginning to be formally documented and passed down through formal training processes.
New entrants still rely on experienced industry practitioners for much of their knowledge and mentoring, usually from within existing business broking businesses.
The demand for knowledgeable and skillful business brokers has never been stronger. There are 1 million+ businesses in Australia. There would not be 1000 business brokers servicing the market.
Business brokers work in an industry that is complex with many competing stake-holders. The business brokers world is relatively intricate compared to that of a real-estate agent. Most Business Broking firms are small practices. Training resources, especially the time available from principals and senior business brokers is limited. This means the necessary knowledge and skills to mentor and teach new business brokers to be successful is not adequate or worse, absent. Sadly, many leave the industry before they get the knowledge and skills they need to be successful.
